An ecological catastrophe threatens Antarctica |
Antarctica, that some time ago was considered to be the last bastion of innocent nature on the planet, is in danger of the invasion of alien organisms. Scientists are talking about an ecological catastrophe.
This catastrophe can be caused both by scientists and numerous tourists visiting the continent. People involuntarily bring there microorganisms, seeds and insects which can change completely the ecosystem. Tour operators require that the clients shouldn’t take with them any food and some scientists even vacuum their clothes. But apparently that is not enough.
The number of people who want to visit and study Antarctica is growing. And together with them the population of unusual for the white continent organisms is growing too. Besides that, global warming helps the population of mice and rats on the continent and that will threaten the enormous breeding colonies of seabirds. |
