Classical music is being played on 40 London underground stations from 5am till midnight. The experiment began on the Brixton station in 2003; it was considered to be successful and they decided to extend the broadcasting network.
The list of the musical compositions contains some hundreds of names including the waltzes of Schubert, suits of Rimsky-Korsakov and the fragments of the symphonies of Mozart and Beethoven. In order to prevent misunderstanding, music is playing only in vestibules of the stations and never in the trains or on the platforms.
The majority of the passengers, questioned by the transport agency “TFL”, approve the initiative: 85% of them consider that music improves the atmosphere of the stations, and 80% say that now they feel more peaceful in the underground. |
