For the recent six years the number of foreign tourists, staying in Cyprus in their own houses has grown from the 114 to 138 thousand of people – this is 5.7% from all the tourist flow in the country. The number of those who stay in the apartments, houses and villas, belonging to the relatives, friends and acquaintances has increased to 471 thousands. This is the 19.5% of the tourist flow, that is the every fifth guest in Cyprus.

This tendency negatively affects the hotel business. During the named period the part of the foreign tourists put up at the apartments and tourist villages of Cyprus has decreased from 29.6% to 21%. At that, however, the number of guests preferring to stay in the 3-, 4- and 5-star hotels has increased from 43.4% to 47.5% from the total number of tourist flow.

Meanwhile, the Cyprus Tourism Organization (CTO) positively estimates the increase of the number of tourists staying in their own houses. According to the CTO experts, this phenomenon positively affects the tourist industry and country’s economy. The owners of the real estate visit the country several times a year. This category of tourists is most welcomed in wintertime, when there is the “low” tourist season in Cyprus. Besides that, the owners of the real estate actively spend their money and invite their friends and acquaintances to visit the island. That is why CTO acclaims this tendency.
