About 28 thousands of bags that have been checked in by the passengers in the new Heathrow terminal are left in the airport building and are waiting till the British Airways collaboratives sort them and return to their owners. According to the words of the aviation minister D.Fitzpatrick, to sort the whole amount of the lost baggage that has been collected in the terminal since 27-th of March, a minimum of a week is needed. The functionality of the automatic baggage checking system in the terminal still cannot be restored.
On March, the 31-st, British Airways has canceled some more flights from the fifth Heathrow terminal, this time 54 flights have been canceled. Because of the present problems, the Olympic Fire that should have come to the new terminal, will be redirected to the VIP-hall of the Heathrow. This decision will be taken to avoid failures in the Olympic Fire Race in London on the 6-th of April.
The experts think that British Airways will have to spend more than 100 million dollars for the compensation to the passengers, though the most pessimistic prognoses double this amount.
The fifth Heathrow terminal, for the construction of which more than 8,6 billion dollars have been spent, has been solemnly opened on the 27-th of March. However, the new terminal that was supposed to serve the international flights appeared to be not really ready for functioning. Almost three hundreds of flights that should have left the terminal have been canceled of delayed. |
