The most known holiday fair has been opened in Strasbourg called the Christmas capital of France. The tradition to arrange Christmas Fairs appeared as far back as XVI century. Christkindelsmarik that means “Fair of Child Jesus” is being held for the 437th time in Strasbourg this year. Thanks to dainty embellishment and decorative lighting, the capital of Alsace looks like a fairy-tale town. There is no second city like this in the whole country, where such warm Christmas atmosphere closely uniting German and French traditions is being created.
About 2 million tourists (as many as in summer) visit the city during five weeks of fair activity. The holiday program includes about 500 events. Various performances, chorus and chamber orchestra concerts will be held in churches and exhibition halls. Tourists may visit nativity and icons of XIX century exhibition. Quebec, the Canadian province is the special guest of the fair this year. Quebec will present its traditions associated with the Christmas celebration.
The Christmas tree, 30 meters high has been placed in the main city square. The embellishment is carried out in the color gamma symbolizing Strasbourg and Quebec. The fragrances of cloves, almonds and mulled wine evocate the forthcoming celebration, in spite of lack of snow.
