65% of population in Egypt have to drink polluted water. The lack of pure water causes death of 25% of children under 5. Drinking tap water in 18 out of 27 Egyptian provinces (muhafaza) is dangerous for health. Alexandria, Giza, North Sinai and Asyut are among the unfortunate regions.
Today 370 liters of water are consumed per person in Egypt. While in Great Britain this amount makes up only 155 liters and in Belgium – approximately 140 liters. However, it does not mean that each Egyptian uses 370 liters every day. As a matter of fact, some citizens of Egypt consider 10 liters of pure water every day to be a real luxury, while others daily change water in their giant swimming-pools with capacity of several thousand liters and irrigate their golf fields.
According to the UN, the minimal necessary daily amount of pure water per person makes up 20 liters.
The main water source of Egypt is the river Nile. The country already suffers from the acute deficiency of water, and in the nearest 50 years the problem shall have a dangerous scale: the lack of water shall cause death of most Egyptians.
