The well-known Spanish tourist region strengthens its positions. The strategic plan of the tourism development in Catalonia, in opinion of experts, deduces this major branch of economy, which now gives more than 11% of the gross national product of the independent community and directly provides with work about 200 thousand people, on a new level of the competitive ability.
Catalonia, glorified not only by its coastal resorts and Barcelona, 7,9 million foreign tourists have visited in 2006, and the total quantity of the reserved days in the hotels was 27 million days which occupies the 2-nd place in the list of the most visited by tourists places in Europe, yielding only to Ille-de-France (the historical area of France together with Paris) which was visited by 14 million tourists last year.
According to the last data received by the public financial institute Caixa Catalunya, Catalonia surpasses Balearic islands, Andalusia, Canary Islands, Prague, Madrid and Munich by the amount of the coming tourists.
The share of the foreign tourist market, measured in number of the visitors, staying in the hotels, has increased in this region from 19,2 % in 2000 up to 25,7 % in 2006.
However, the region is, by the amount of the tourism incomes, in the backward position in comparison with other areas of Spain. In 2006 the average index of tourists’ expenses was 634 euros for the whole rest (14-th place) and 80 euros per day (15-th place) while the general index across Spain was 857 euros and 91 euros, respectively.
One of the long-term tasks of Catalonia is to increase the profitability, received from the separately taken tourist. The program, supposing the increase of quantity and variety of the companies in the sphere of services and entertainments in the region is developed for this purpose.
