| Owners of the French bars held a mass protest demonstration in Paris, connected with prohibition of smoking in public places. 10 000 people took part in the demonstration. The prohibition came into effect in France already on 1 February, however, bars and casinos were given a 11 months delay. Thus, starting with 1 January, 2008, the privilege shall be canceled. The first cigarette smoked with the first cup of coffee in the bar is a tradition for many French smokers and an important source of income for the bars. However, according the the authorities' position, the barmen's march to the building of the National Assembly won't influence this decision. "The Government decree shall be implemented without any delay or indulgence, since the French have been waiting for it for along time", the Government representative said. |
