From 2012 the airlines flying to the countries of the EU will be obliged to buy emission rights. The tickets for the long-distance flights might rise in price by 30-40 Euros. The experts give notice that this is just the beginning.
The ministers of ecology of the European Union member-countries come to the agreement about the introduction of an air carrier fee for the emission of the combustion products into the atmosphere. Beginning with 2012, all the airlines, which airplanes take off and land in the airports of the European Union, will be forced to buy the rights for the emission of the harmful substances.
Following the reform the tickets for the distant flights might rise in price by 30-40 Euros. However, the air carriers can “relatively easy” avoid the growth in prices by switching over to the usage of “more ecological technology”.
“We don’t have for an object to slow down the development of the air traffic sector that is key sector for the EU economy, - emphasized the European Union commissar Stavros Dimas who deals with the environmental problems. – We just want to slow down the growth of the emission of CO2”.
According to the Eurocommission’s data, about 3% of all the exhaust gases emission on the EU territory goes to the air transport. From 1990 the amount of the air emission increased in two times. Brussels warns that till 2020 this figure will be doubled again. |
