As an ancient tradition demands, Christmas markets are organized on the old squares of German cities on the eve of Advent (period of four weeks before Christmas according to western tradition), the markets will be opened till December 24.
The most gorgeous and grand fairs, with thousands of visitors are considered to be held in Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg federal lands. One of the most bright and famous Christmas markets is situated on the Old Town market-place near the famous Frauenkirche church in Nuremberg, where, according to a longstanding tradition, it is opened by a local girl who has passed a special contest, appearing as a golden-winged angel. Every time the local media starts short-life debates over the confession of the winner-girl: should she be a Catholic or a Protestant?
Every second Thursday of November, for already more than half a century, two thousand of Nuremberg pupils with hand-made flashlights go in a parade through the evening city to the Christmas market. From the balcony of Frauenkirche, Nuremberg ‘Christkind’(‘Christ child’) reads solemnly evangelic texts and invites everybody to his Christmas market to the festal music accompaniment. The decorations of Christmas manger, where alive actors illustrate the evangelic story about the birth of Jesus Christ are arranged in the center of the market.
From 2 till 4 million tourists from all over the world come every year to Nuremberg, Dresden and Munich in order to feel the holiday spirit of Christmas markets, enjoy their fabulous extravaganza, to taste Christmas gingerbreads and to drink a can of hot mulled wine.
In recent years, however, police installs special camera recorders on such markets in order to watch pickpockets and criminals, willing to foist merchants the bogus money; they come here from the countries neighboring Germany. |
