Netherlands are going to built the island in the form of a tulip |
The Netherlands are going "to overdraw" the map of Europe. Dubai has already constructed the islands in the form of a palm tree. Now is the turn of the artificial island in the form of a tulip which should help the overpopulated territory of the Netherlands and protect the coast from rising sea.
Supporters of construction insist that it will be the example of management of waters that is rather actual for the Netherlands in the conditions of global warming. Opponents say that, at first, such construction is very expensive, and secondly, it can do harm to ecosystems.
The survey in October has shown that citizens of the country are more afraid of flooding, than of terrorist attacks. They believe that this experiment will protect them from rising water. It is known, that Holland has low-lying areas, where water all time tries to return its territory. About 40% of the territory lies below the sea level. Politicians declare that the country needs a new territory, «people in the Netherlands live practically on each other”.
Certainly, it is a very expensive project. The island that is 50 km long, and has the total square of 100 thousand hectares will cost 10 billion Euro. But with modern technologies it is quite a real project.
Independent ecological groups declare that the artificial island can do much harm to navigation, fishing, and also migrant kinds of birds.
"It is not so easy to do what you want in the North Sea. in the Persian Gulf, where the Palm Islands were built, the wave height does not exceed 2 meters, here they reach 10 meters. The North Sea is one of the richest in the world. The island would do great harm to the coastal fauna". Some experts affirm that the consolidation of the current coastal line would be a more considerable option. |
