A number of American airlines intend to provide their clients with access to the Internet directly during their flights in the near future. So, already on Tuesday JetBlue Airways will allow passengers of one of the planes to use e-mail and instant messaging system. Other companies - American Airlines, Virgin America and Alaska Airlines - plan to provide their clients with wider spectrum of the Internet-services in the nearest months. However, you will have to pay for them, as the New York Times considers.
During the takeoff and landing it will not be possible to make a connection, but after ascending to altitude laptop owners will be able to send messages through the World Wide Web. But Virgin America intends to provide with the Internet even the passengers who travel without notebook computer or smart phone - in its liners it will be possible to take advantage of the special screen. Now passengers of Virgin America can already order food and drinks through a small computer.
In spite of the fact that the new technology will allow to provide clients with telecommunication onboard, representatives of airlines do not hasten to give such opportunity. Other passengers can dislike, that a certain talkative fellow traveler discusses with someone his flight within several hours. And if there are several dozens of such fellow travelers, travel can turn into the real nightmare.
The companies recognize that for the present time the Internet on the board of a plane is doomed to work much more slowly, than on the ground, and technicians will have to eliminate numerous problems. This is one of the reasons why they will not take any payment from the users meanwhile. Anyway, JetBlue will become the first air carrier in the USA, which will allow clients to get connected.
As recent researches of the "Forrester Research" company have shown that if the flight duration is from two till four hours, 25 % of passengers would agree to spend 10 dollars for using the Internet. When the flight duration is more than four hours already 45% of the respondents are ready to pay.
American Airlines and Virgin America promise to provide their clients with access to the Internet already in the spring of 2008. Alaska Airlines for the same purpose intends to use special satellite system - in one of the liners of the company the Internet will appear in the second quarter of 2008. In case of success, by the end of 2009 all planes of Alaska Airlines will be equipped with the corresponding equipment. |
